I have been looking somewhat for a loader backhoe to do some misc tilework with, but one of these popped up for sale locally and kind of wonder if it is the way to go. Has a chain-type digger on the back - can put in 4' tile (bigger if I want to swap out cutting teeth ) down about 5' (does the 60 mean 60' deep?
Has a backhoe and blade on the front end. In any case, anyone have any experience on one of these to give some advice as to whether or not it is a practical way to do some limited tile work? I think this particular unit is decent - I know previous owner and he has put some decent money into it and I think he takes pretty good care of his stuff. He claims this machine and 2 guys can put in a decent amount of tile in a day.

It's slow, and you can't gride tile an 80A, but they dig a nice trench for tile. I just bought a Ditch Witch trencher a while back, to do just what you are describing. Actually, I'm going to use it to trench in power, water, and drainage lines around a new machine shed, but hope to get around to some small tile jobs on the back forty.
Hey, if you showed up with a little trencher like that, in about 1900, the guys laying all that clay tile by hand, would have thought they'd died and gone to heaven! The biggest problem we had, when we originally had a trencher 25 years ago, was that neighbors were pestering us to death to do trenching for them, and we did not want to get into the custom trenching business. Plenty of power especially cutting a small ditch like will fit a 4 inch tile and it doesn't do bad cutting for an 8 inch tile in decent soil. The one I used quite a bit was set to lay 6 inch an would just keep on digging.
The hoe has plenty of power, an 18 inch bucket works well. If I ran across a deal on one I wouldn't hesitate to buy it to replace my 360 even though the 360 fills my needs well. It has the Cummins engine and has plenty of power. The digger is hydraulic powered and is reversable which is a great plus. A nice 6 way blade on the front and crab steer or 4-wheel steer which makes a big difference when cornering or backfilling.
I don't think you will go wrong on this machine. I have had Ditch Witch before and I can tell you that the Case 660 is light years ahead of the DW. Now, how's this for a recommendation!!!! Probably could even put a laser on it if you want to get fancy. I think the 660 has the steering wheel and you have to get off to use the backhoe like this 460.

The 360 is smaller version but you don't have to get off to use the backhoe. I don't know why they put the trencher on the front of some and the back of others. The 660 would be a beast. I would like to have one. Nice machine for utility work. We like it very much. I wouldn't want to install tile except for the downspout drains, etc. Keeping grade with a chain like that is tough and the crumbs are 'right there' on the edge just waiting to fall in below the tile since you don't have tile boot like a wheel machine. A 60' chain usually digs a 30' trench. Ours goes up to 48' deep, I think it's close to 8', not sure.
Tough to get 48' deep. Like a said, great machine. The hoe is pretty small, with an 18' standard bucket and no comparison to a full size hoe. We have a JD 210C with a 24' bucket. Perhaps 5X faster digger.
Road gear is about 8 mph, with a two speed hydro.
