I have star series elna 62 Supermatic, free arm with blue top, auto buttonhole. It winds bobbin slowly only if started by hand turning fly wheel, but makes a clunky noise. Will not stitch or move to stitch, unless turning by hand continuously.
If motor is on and foot control pressed, it makes a clunky noise but only moves if turned manually. If I turn by hand only and no foot control use, there's no noise. Needle goes up & down and stitch forms okay when wheel is manually turned. What new part/s will I need?
Is the required part still available to buy? What is the approx cost of it? Who can repair the machine in Darwin NT. Is the old machine worth repairing? I have the flatbed version of your machine.
It was acting the same way. There is a rubber drive gear in the machine that becomes smoothed out over the years from wear.
When it is smooth, it loses friction and that is why you have to move the hand wheel manually. There is not enough friction on the gear for it to drive the operation of the machine by the motor. I had to get down into the machine and rub the smooth surface until it was not so slick and created some friction with the parts it comes in contact with. A factory-trained elna repairman suggested this fix instead of buying the replacement part because the replacement part is not as good as the swiss made original part.
My machine runs well now. Posted on Apr 02, 2014. Sounds like a drive issue with your Star Series, I'd check out yellow pages and phone a few sewing machine guys until you find someone who knows the vintage Elnas and can take a look at it. Or you could join the Yahoo group Elna Heirlooms and ask some of the guys on there who know these machines well. They may give you enough info to at least take it apart and take a look inside yourself. There are a few web sites selling parts, www.
Sewingpartsonline.com has parts for this model listed including a motor. This is a great machine, I have one too and love it. I bought mine 2nd hand in 1988 and it still sews beautifully, outlasting my Elna Air Electronic SU.
Mine has never been to a serviceman while I've had it, I always keep it in the case and inside a cupboard, and give it a good clean and oil when I pull it out to use. Its straight stitch is beautiful to behold.
Posted on Mar 06, 2011. My model list tells me this is the Star Series SU model, white with a blue top. These were made between 1964 and 1978, so getting on for 50 years old. I am assuming that the fly wheel wont turn at all for you, when machines are left for long periods any lubrication internally dries up. You can try to rectify yourself if you are patient, need Tri-flow Oil (preferably with a long neck applicator so you can get into the little spaces), a special lubricant which also contains a solvent, and a hair dryer to add heat. You will need to take off the top cover (two screws) to gain access to the main shaft and needle swing bearing.
Also the free arm top plate should be removable with a single screw. Then get into the machine and clean with a small brush any visible lint or gunky build up on shafts, lubricate, then apply heat to the metal parts and wiggle to free up.
Expect to spend some time on it, before you'll get things to free up. The needle swing bearing, the arm which holds the needle often seizes up too so straight stitch will work but no zig zag. You might want to join the Yahoo group Elna Heirlooms, lots of Elna lovers there who share their knowledge.
Dec 15, 2013. These discs are either single or double discs, the doubles give forwards and backwards movement by the feed dogs moving the fabric as well as side to side movement of the needle. This gives you the 'Supermatic' stitches, revolutionary in 1952 when Elna developed this technology. I'm assuming that you have a Supermatic (green) or Star Series SU (white with blue top) Elna model? Your model will have a code number on the side plate by the power point, it may be 62 if its a Star, there is some variation in how you select the automatic stitches between these models but the basics are similar. Start first by turning the stitch width selector to zero and stitch length selector to zero.
You need to insert the disc into the Elnagraph carefully, lining up the dot marking on the disc with the finger within the elnagraph, there is a little hole underside of the disc where this finger goes into to lock the disc in place. You now turn the stitch selector to 'A' for automatic, and turn the stitch width to 4. Cell study guide answer key. Always turn your dials back to zero before removing the disc as there is a little feeler that swings over to 'read' off the disc and you won't want to damage this.
The very early Elna supermatic take a slightly different disc, the finger hole is slightly different to the later machines and they were removed using a little tool. Later models it got easier and you push the middle of the elnagraph silver ring to release the disc.
I hope I haven't confused you more, you may want to join the Swiss Elna user group called Elna Heirlooms under yahoo.com groups, its a very helpful group of members and you should find a thread on these machines there. Mar 18, 2012. If the fly wheel is going around then the clutch isn't disengaged to wind the bobbin, you need to pull out the flywheel on your model to disengage the clutch for bobbin winding. Take thread from thread spool across to bobbin winder thread guide, then back to bobbin and thread the tail through the hole on top of the bobbin. Place bobbin onto spindle on top of machine and then push it against the stop to engage the bobbin winding motor.
HOld the thread tail up and start winding slowly until the bobbin core has been covered including the starting point. Stop and trim off the thread tail with scissors. COntinue winding bobbin and give the thread a nudge if needed to wind evening top middle and bottom of the bobbin. A good smooth wind is important.
Also don't wind at full speed and keep an eye on the thread reel that the thread is coming off, you don't want it bouncing around as this will. the thread and stretch then relax it affecting your bobbin wind. Obviously if you know this and the bobbin winding mechanisim is just not working, then it will need a service/replacement by an Elna repair person. Aug 01, 2011. Not unless you can find another swiss elna, like star series su. Check bobbin in right way, holes on top to wind and load. You havent bought anothet type bobbin???
Go to www.arizonaexpressionz.com and download a manual for supermatic. Then read bobbin winding and threading carefully and rewinf bobbin and thread up again. Make sure thread goes into tension spring all the way. Bobbin should turn anticlockwise when yoou pull thread. Also please brush clean bobbin holder area and check for any threads caught there. Now a drop of quality clear machine oil in middle hole and gently run for 30secs to work in. Do this every time you get your machine out.
Elna Su Sewing Machine Manual
There are several oiling points shown in manual. These machines are quality but yours may need love tlc from a elna tech especially if it has not been serviced in a while.
But a well maintained elna will out stitch a new plastic machine any day in my humble opinion. If you want to join yahoo group elna heirlooms, experts who service their own and share photos info manuals and love these vintage classics. Jun 16, 2011. There may be threads jammed up in the bobbin holder area causing the jam. But removing the inner bobbin holder is a bit tricky if you haven't done it before. There are two little screws holding the silver inner down onto a black ceramic piece (inner guard ring), and you need to get these lined up the right way to get the bobbin holder back into position afterwards.
I would suggest that you join the Yahoo group Elna Heirlooms, then check out the files and photos loaded up by other members who work on their Elnas. You shouldn't need to remove the feed dogs, just give them a clean with a little brush. But internally the machine may need a good clean and lube and without a service manual or good guide this can be challenging. If you go this link you can down load the manual for this machine, the Star Series SU. Go to page 7 of the first part to see about removing the bobbin holder and inner guard ring. It is a case of lining up the cut out of the black plate to the front, then putting the bobbin holder on top with the little arms facing front also, then replacing the two screws.

I'd suggest you take photos with a digital camera before you start to help you get it back in the right way. I hope this helps you with the Supermatic, did you get the discs and accessories with it too? Lovely Swiss quality machine with great stitching so if you can't get it unjammed, you may wish to find an experienced Elna Technician to take a look.
White Sewing Center stock lots of parts for these machines too, Jun 08, 2011. First please double check that the flywheel clutch in engaged and not in bobbin winding mode, ie the inner knob is locked by holding outer flywheel and turning inner wheel away from you.
If you remove the needle plate and bobbin cover and turn the flywheel manually can you see the hook rotating at all? If the needle is going up and down and the rotary hook is not rotating, then my guess will be that the pinon gear down in the free arm area has failed and will need to be replaced. You don't say what model but if it is a star series you should be able to remove the top plate on the free arm by undoing one screw and exposing this area to confirm this. If its a Stella or Lotus it won't be so easy to view. Either way, if its a Swiss made Elna parts are still available and there are serviceman around who can do this repair.
If you are in the USA I would suggest you browse for parts/repair info on Swiss Elnas. Or try and search by your model number to see the parts available. May 16, 2011. I'd suggest that you join the Yahoo user group for Heirloom Elnas, the members are very helpful and share images of manuals and their experience. You should be able to download a copy of the supermatic manual from here once you've joined up.
Is your supermatic a green model like this one? Or there is a white with blue top supermatic from the Star Series, it looks like this If its the star series, you'll see above a round knob with red and black numbers, this is the stitch length dial. Red is reverse, black is forwards. The lever just to the left is the stitch width lever and the round dial to left again is the needle position dial. If its the green model then the dials and knobs are in different places but they work in a similar fashion. Good luck wiht your machine.l Mar 04, 2010. A link to a supermatic manual is here - I suggest you download this and print it out as this machine is over 50 years old now and manuals are scarce.

Disengage the clutch by holding the outside of the fly wheel and turning the inner knob of the wheel towards you. You need to take the thread from the spool across to an eyelet on top left, then back to the bobbin winder, up through a hole in the top of the bobbin and hold the thread tail. Flick the bobbin across against the stopper. Now press the presser foot or knee control to start the motor. Hold the thread tail until youve got coverage across the bobbin enough to hold the start, then stop winding and cut the thread tail with scissors. Now continue winding but put the handle of your scissors on top of the thread spool to stop it bouncing and ensure your thread winds smoothly and under tension.
Watch the bobbin fill and give the thread a nudge to fill top and bottom as well as the middle evenly, you want a nice even wind. Fill to 3/4 and stop, flick bobbin back off the stopper, then cut the thread. Remember to re-engage the clutch by reversing the first step. This is a lovely heirloom Elna machine - you need to thread the bobbin as the manual describes and get the thread into the tension spring. Please read the manual information on oiling too, this machine needs to be oiled on the red spot locations every time you use it according to the manual, use good quality clear sewing machine oil for this purpose.
