Avoiding Engine Flooding The smell of gas after repeated attempts to start your Weed Eater usually indicates that the engine is flooded. It happens when you make too many start attempts with the choke in the 'On' position. According to the Weed Eater manual, you should push the priming bulb six times, set the choke to the 'On' position and make no more than six start attempts. If the engine doesn't start, set the choke to the halfway position and try a maximum of six more times. If the engine still doesn't start, you should address other possible problems instead of continuing to attempt to start the engine. Spark and Air In order to start, your Weed Eater Featherlite needs the proper mixture of air and gas in the combustion chamber, and a spark to ignite it.
The spark plug and air filter are both easy to check - simply remove each one and clean or replace it if it's dirty. If the plug needs to be replaced, use the appropriate one specified in your Owner's Manual with a 0.025-inch gap. If the air filter is dirty, clean it off by blowing it with compressed air, or wash it with warm soapy water and let it dry. You can also simply replace it. Fuel Issues Failure to start after servicing the plug and air filter indicates that fuel isn't reaching the carburetor. The cause may be a dirty fuel filter, which is in the gas tank and can be retrieved with a curved piece of wire. Pull it off the fuel line and replace it with a new one.
Fuel deposits may also have clogged the carburetor ports if your trimmer has been in storage. You can often clear these by removing the air filter, spraying starting fluid into the carburetor port and pulling the starting rope. Besides igniting easily, starting fluid also dissolves gunk that blocks fuel lines. Problems Requiring Repair If fuel stands in the carburetor long enough, it can thicken into a varnish that coats the seals and blocks the orifices, and sometimes the only remedy is to remove the carburetor, disassemble it and clean it. You can buy a rebuild kit specific for your model so that you can replace sensitive, difficult-to-clean parts with new ones.
Another problem that requires repair is failure of the recoil starter rope to retract. This may be caused by a tangle in the rope or a broken recoil string. The repair isn't difficult, but it requires removal of the starter housing.
